TAIWAN

Dear Beloved Partners,

 

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. As we head into Passion week, we behold the Lamb of God who takes our sins & laid down his life as a ransom. Good Friday and Easter, just 3 days apart but so vast the chasm. Jesus, flogged and died on Friday but early Sunday morning rose again and the tomb is empty! What hope we have in Jesus!

 

Since our last letter many things have happened here.  Chinese New Year was celebrated with fireworks, house cleaning, a feast with family, red envelopes, and burning paper money. All these traditions to ward off bad spirits and bring in money and blessings for the new year. What a blessing our Korean Christian heritage has been!  Every year, we worship and pray to bring in the new year with God’s blessing at church praying and worshiping past midnight.

 

Aquila has been faithfully going to the rehab. center 2 times a week. He purposely takes the local road going back home to drive through the local neighborhood. Every 20 meters or so, there is a temple and people worshiping with incense. Aquila, turns on praise music and “prayer drives” on his way back home from the rehab. center. Aquila is encouraged to see the transformation in the lives of the men there.  A few have really grown and sing praises and listen to the WORD fervently.  What an awesome sight to see, men who were sleeping or uninterested in the past but now on fire for JESUS!  PTL!

 

Prisca has been teaching her upper elementary class poetry.  The students were asked to write a reflection on a poem about giving God their broken heart and how God would take their bleeding, hurting heart and mend it to give back as whole again. A few of the MK’s wrote the most heart wrenching responses back to God.  One little 4th grade girl wrote the following:

 

Dear God,

Thank you, LORD.  But then why do I feel scared, anxious, and why do I feel depressed?

                                         

Very confused,

This little girl did not look sad, anxious, or scared but inside her little heart was all this turmoil. I read her letter and realized how insensitive I was as a teacher, trying to merely cover material and standards and not “seeing” her struggles. I had a talk & prayer time with Anna and I realized that there have been recent deaths of friends and family members. Also, the LORD allowed me to see all the “precious things” she had to bury as they moved from country to country and now finally settling in Taiwan. Maybe there’s someone next to you that may be going through a very dark season.  Let’s pray & ask the LORD for us to be quick to listen and slow to speak.

 

Josiah, our 3rd son will be getting married in June so we will go back this summer. Josiah and Maliah will finish their junior & senior year as a married couple. Please pray for them. They will have a small ceremony in OR. (www.theknot.com/us/josiah-kyun-and-maliah-rempel-jun-2024)

Aquila, Prisca, & 4 young men       3/24/2024

 

사랑하는 동역자 여러분들께,

 

      진심으로 감사드립니다. 고난 주간을 맞이하여 우리의 죄를 지시고 대속물로 목숨을 내어주신 하나님의 어린 양을 바라봅니다. 성금요일과 부활절은 불과 3일 간격이지만 그 간격은 너무나도 큽니다. 예수님은 금요일에 채찍에 맞고 십자가에 죽으셨지만 주일 이른 아침에 다시 살아나셨고 무덤은 비어 있습니다! 우리는 예수님 안에서 얼마나 큰 소망을 가지고 있습니까!

     

    지난 편지 이후 이곳에서 많은 일이 일어났습니다.  구정은 불꽃놀이, 집 청소, 가족잔치, 빨간 봉투, 종이 돈 태우기로 명절을 보냅니다. 이 모든 전통은 나쁜 귀신을 쫓고 새해에 돈과 축복을 가져오기 위한 것입니다. 한국의 기독교 유산이 얼마나 큰 축복인지요!  우리는 매해 교회에서 송구영신 예배를 드리며 하나님의 축복으로 새해를 맞이하기를 기도합니다.

      

    아굴라는 일주일에 두 번씩 중독재활원에 충실히 다니고 있습니다. 그는 집으로 돌아갈 때 일부러 시골길을 택해 시골길을 지나갑니다. 20미터 정도마다 사원이 있고 사람들이 향을 피우며 우상에게 절하고 있습니다. 그는 집으로 돌아가는 길에 찬양을 틀고 'Prayer Driving'를 합니다. 중독재활원 형제들의 삶이 변화하는 것을 보고 격려를 받습니다.  몇몇은 정말 성장하여 진심으로 찬양을 부르고 말씀을 듣습니다.  과거에는 잠만 자거나 관심이 없던 형제들이 이제는 예수님을 위해 불타오르는 모습을 보는 것은 정말 멋진 광경입니다!  주님께 찬양드립니다!

      

   브리스길라는 초등학교 학생들에게 시를 가르치고 있습니다.  학생들에게 하나님께 상한 마음을 드리고, 하나님께서 피 흘리고 상처 입은 마음을 어떻게 고쳐서 다시 온전하게 회복하실지에 대한 시를 묵상하며 하나님께 편지 쓰기를 요청했습니다. 몇몇 MK들은 하나님께 가장 가슴을 울리는 응답을 썼습니다.  한 초등학교 4학년 여학생은 다음과 같이 썼습니다:

사랑하는 하나님,

감사합니다, 주님.  그런데 왜 저는 무섭고 불안하고 우울한 마음이 들까요?                            

매우 혼란스러운,

       이 어린 소녀는 슬퍼 보이지도, 불안해 보이지도, 무서워 보이지도 않았지만 그녀의 작은 마음 속에는 이 모든 혼란이 있었습니다. 저는 그 아이의 편지를 읽으며 제가 교사로서 얼마나 챙피했는지, 아이의 어려움을 '보지' 않고 교과과정만 신경 쓴것을 깨달았습니다. 저는 안나하고 대화와 기도의 시간을 가졌고 최근에 친구와 가족들의 죽음이 있었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 또한 주님께서는 그아이가 이 나라 저 나라 옮겨 다니며 ‘묻어야’ 했던 '소중한 것들'을 모두 보게 하셨고, 마침내 대만에 정착하게 하셨습니다. 여러분 곁에 아주 어두운 시기를 겪고 있는 사람이 있을지도 모릅니다.  우리가 듣기는 속히 하고 말하기는 더디 하도록 주님께 기도하고 간구해야 합니다.

     

   셋째 아들 주성이가 6월에 결혼식이 있기에 이번 여름에 미국에 갈 예정입니다. 주성이와 Maliah는 부부가 되어 대학3, 4학년을 마치게 될 것입니다. 그들을 위해 기도 부탁합니다.  OR에서 작은 결혼식을 할 예정입니다.
